Scarborough is a fishing town and seaside resort located on the Yorkshire Coast.
The town’s most famous landmark is the castle ruins on the edge of the cliffs that seperates the North Bay area of the town from the South Bay.
It is currently the main base of Scarborough Borough Council, which maintains the Borough of Scarborough region of North Yorkshire which also incorporates the towns of Whitby and Filey. This is likely to change soon due to an administrative shake-up to North Yorkshire, which at time of writing is a work in progress.
Other notable landmarks include Valley Bridge, and the War Memorial on top of Oliver’s Mount.
The town is connected to the UK’s national road network via the A171, A170, A64 & A165.
There is also a railway terminus located in the town with regular services:
- Northern Rail from Scarborough to Sheffield via Seamer, Filey, Bridlington, Nafferton, Driffield, Hutton Cranswick, Arram, Beverley, Cottingham, Hull, Hessle, Ferriby, Brough, Broomfleet, Gilberdyke, Saltmarshe, Goole, Doncaster, Conisbrough, Mexborough & Meadowhall.
- Transpennine from Scarborough to Liverpool via Malton, York & Manchester.
In addition to the War Memorial, the Oliver’s Mount area also has a cafe at the top of the hill, as well as a TV Transmitter. It also serves as an occasional Motorcycle Race Track.
There is also a Sealife Centre located at the top end of the North Bay near Scalby Mill, which has been around since at least the early 1990’s.
Peasholme Park is one of the better known in the town, and features a lake with an Island in the middle of it featuring an Oriental Garden type thing.
The area around the nearby Peasholme Roundabout where the A165 meets with the road linking onto Royal Albert Drive has seen significant redevelopment in recent years, and has kissed goodbye to the Kinderland Theme Park and the waterpark that used to be located there.
The nearby Peasholme Waterchute and the North Bay Railway have still survived, while the Scarborough Open Air Theatre was revamped sometime around 2010(ish) and regularly hosts well known popular music acts.
Scarborough Cricket Club has a fairly decent sized ground for playing the sport hidden behind the guesthouses located along North Marine Road, and known for hosting an annual cricket festival.
There are countless opportunities for shopping addicts dotted throughout the town, including the Brunswick Shopping Centre – kind of small compared to places like the metrocentre in Gateshead, but a nice enough place to look around, though has lost it’s flagship Debenham’s store that has been there since the place was redevelopped from an earlier building on the site.
Foreshaw Road is the place is town to go to engage in the traditional “British Seaside Holiday”, even if it has lost the landmark Futurist Theatre along there.
